I received a complimentary ticket to Christmas is Burning for my review. All opinions are honest and mine alone.
Cafe Nordo is back, and this time for Christmas! Even though I haven’t been able to blog my heart out this season, you know I had to at least let you in on my favorite dinner theater production:). So if you’re in Seattle (or just passing through) and you want something totally unique to do this Christmas season, I’ve got just the thing.
Cafe Nordo – Christmas Is Burning
After I left this latest Nordo production, part of me wondered to myself “What did I just see”? I tried to sum it up in my brain (to the best of my ability) on how I would describe Christmas Is Burning. Are you ready (drumroll please…)?
A cheeky explosion of Christmas and time.
I could explain the plot to you, but that would be better done by the puppets. Yes, puppets. Cafe Nordo’s website calls it “A collaboration with Sgt. Rigsby and his puppets. Robots from the future travel back in time to steal Christmas in this bawdy and irreverent sci-fi comedy.” That about sums it up, and the 50 different shadow puppet characters will take you down one rabbit hole of an adventure.
Of course, Seattle All-Stars still infuse the show, (Roy Stanton as Captain Gulliver, Opal Peachey as the Time Engineer Dutch Elm and Ray Tagavilla) and are brilliant as always. I thought the night could have ended with Opal crooning a certain Christmas classic. I would have left happy right then and there.
Christmas Is Burning is about as opposite as you can get from your traditional Snowflake Lane Saturday night. In so many ways it’s perfect for the denizens of my dear Emerald City. Witty, a bit bawdy, and anything but traditional.
Each Cafe Nordo show I favor something. This time it was the presentation (and taste) of the food. Beyond darling! As someone who adores themes, it filled me with glee to see gingerbread people flung over a bowl or stockings stuffed. Even the Sweet Baby Jesus Bread Loaf (which tasted divine) was so creative that it didn’t offend my Christian senses :). My snippet of the menu is below and details of the upcoming Christmas Is Burning shows are at the bottom. Half of the remaining nights are sold out, so don’t wait too long. You can’t Amazon Prime this one!
Baby Jesus Bread Loaf
Swedish Saffron Loaf from Repast Bakery Swaddled in a Manger and Served with Antipasto Wreath of Cheese and Pickled Things. These were seriously so good! I could live on this bread alone.
Empanadas stuffed with White Bean Verde and Tomato Chutney with Goat Cheese. Oh my goodness, mouth-watering good!
Escape from Christmas
Local Chestnuts and Butternut Squash Soup with a Savory Gingerbread Person. The cutest soup I ever did see!
Reindeer Shephard’s Pie
Indian Valley Blitzen stewed in Cabernet, Cloves, and Cinnamon topped with Duchess Potatoes from Olsen Farms
Jerusalem Artichoke and Lentil Shepherd’s Pie With Chanterelle Mushrooms topped with Duchess Potatoes from Olsen Farms
- I had the Vegetarian version, which was delicious! The duchess potatoes melted in your mouth, and the artichoke/lentil mixture really made it feel like you were eating
The Dawn of Spring
House made Nitro-Frozen Peppermint Custard.
The Dawn of Spring, get it? :). He tasted so good that there was no way he was going to melt entirely before finishing him off.
Now, for the deets. The shows runs Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays until December 30th AND they just added a Wednesday night show on December 21st.
During Christmas week they are doing a Needs for The Needy Drive (which benefits Bread of Life Mission) so if you want to help bring your presents for the homeless with you to the show, and Nordo will do the rest!
