One scroll through Instagram, especially during the summer and it doesn’t take long to see how popular the #PNW (Pacific Northwest) has become. What’s there not to love about mountain views, lush greenery, and tranquil water all in one spot, and in so many locations? Naturally, this type of ambiance can lead to hiking, fishing, kayaking, biking and an abundance of recreational activities. Usually fueled by a coffee in hand, and quite often with a canine companion in tow.
Yet even in our urban locations, you can find many of us out doing yoga on rooftops or running around a nearby park. If the Pacific Northwest is one thing, it’s active, and staying hydrated can pose a major challenge. Thanks to The Coca-Cola Company and CVS Health, with these eight easy steps it’s also a challenge that can easily be met so you can feel your best and focus your time on more important things. Like getting that perfect mountaintop latte shot ;). After all, #PNW is really a state of mind more than a location.
How To Stay Hydrated Through Your #PNW Summer
The Mayo Clinic recommends that on average, men should get about 13 cups of water a day and women should aim for 9 cups (which is slightly more than the 8- 8 oz glasses a day rule). While this amount can vary from person to person, the fact remains that it is crucial to get an adequate intake of water and fluids. Dehydration can sneak up on you and give no warning signs other than perhaps headaches, dry hair or early wrinkles. This summer, The Coca-Cola Company and CVS Health have started the “Life-Quenching” movement, which brings awareness to the benefits of hydration and healthy lifestyle choices.
Personally, I gravitate towards smartwater. It’s distilled water with added electrolytes, and from someone who’s tank is generally running on low that’s everything.
1. Variety is key.
This is an important one because after a while 9 cups of water a day can get boring. And as soon as it feels like a chore, I’m more likely to stop doing it. That’s where variety comes in! Pick something that is still relatively good for you but that still gets you your fluid. Honest Teas are my favorite because they’re fair-trade (what’s more #PNW than that?), organic, and not as sweet as some other teas out there. They also use cane sugar instead of high fructose which is a major plus for my family! I still aim to get my 9 cups of water a day, but I mix these teas in as a treat and so I won’t burn out on water alone.
2. Get a versatile backpack that has places for water.
A backpack is key for carrying around all kinds of things you’ll need from hiking to music festivals, to walks along the beach. Make sure it has a place(s) for water and/or tea. I also like to fit my camera inside the backpack to catch those killer views. If you can find a loop on the side for yoga mats, even better! Compare and contrast different packs to find the one that works with your lifestyle.
3. Prepare ahead.
This applies to so many things in life, but especially to water intake. It doesn’t take very long at night to fill up water bottles and strategically place them for the next day. If possible, I like to pour the smartwater into insulating bottles that I can reuse.
4. Use a tracker.
Here in the #PNW, we love our tech and what better way to use it than to help with staying hydrated? There are tons of water tracker apps, or you can go old-school and print one out to put on your fridge. If you’re a FitBit user then track your intake on the same app you track your steps. It’s pretty motivating! Right now I’m using the Daily Water Free app for iPhone and I love how you can customize your water size, create a schedule with reminders, and set daily goals! The important part is to find one that works for you and be consistent with it.
5. Keep it everywhere.
I do mean everywhere! Place some in the car, by your computer, at work, in your backpack or in your purse. If it’s there you’ll be much more likely to drink it. After you drink your daily coffee, fill that up with water or tea too!
6. Make a DIY Face Mist.
The skin is the largest organ in our body so doesn’t it make sense that we should keep it hydrated as well? You want to be fresh faced for those nature selfies, even if it’s after a night in a tent or in front of a smokey campfire. Here’s a quick step-by-step on how to make your very own. The smartwater was an easy grab at CVS and it takes under five minutes to make at home!
4 oz. glass or aluminum mister bottle
smartwater (about 1/3 c)
1 tsp. Pure Aloe Vera Gel
6 TBS. Organic Rose Water
2 drops Geranium Essential Oil
2 drops Peppermint Essential Oil
1 tsp. Vitamin E Oil
*optional (1 tsp. Witch Hazel, 1 Cucumber, Ylang Ylang or lavender Essential Oil)
Measure out the Aloe Vera gel, Rose Water (Witch Hazel if using) and Vitamin E into a small bowl or measuring cup.
Add the drops of the essential oils you chose (2 drops each).
Stir together and pour into the mist bottle.
Top off with the remaining filtered/distilled water.
Shake well and keep in the fridge. Shake again prior to use.
When pouring the liquid into the mist bottle, either use a funnel or a measuring cup to avoid spilling the solution. Then, simply shake and enjoy! The great thing about this recipe is that it’s highly customizable! These mists are great to use upon waking, after a shower, to set makeup in, or before bed. It will make you feel hydrated and ready for anything.
7. Don’t forget man’s best friend.
Sometimes we get so focused on our own health that we forget the warmer temperature and increased activity levels can affect our dogs too. Monitoring your pet’s water intake is crucial. I always take a portable water dish that reduces spilling, and use the smartwater from the car to fill it up.
8. Have a checklist handy.
I can’t even tell you how much I depend on the checklist. With summer being insanely busy, I need to have checklists for just about everything.
This adaptable checklist (free printable) will help you stay hydrated and prepare you for whatever other #PNW activities come your way.
It won’t help keep you hydrated but having a portable charger for your phone is crucial. Nothing ruins the zen quite like the battery running out just as you’re being captured oh so naturally staring off peacefully into a ravine, or trying to hold that yoga pose. The things we do for The Gram’ ;-).
With summer being so busy, I like to make life easier by heading to my local CVS Store to stock up on smartwater and Honest Teas. They’re easy to find and affordable and I don’t have to worry about filtering my own water at home. It’s also super convenient because I can stop there on my way home from work because it’s right on the way. Anything that saves time is well worth the quick stop! If you want a different size or you’re feeling like a cold drink then head to the beverage cooler where you’ll find an even bigger selection waiting for you. The best part? Spend $5, get $2 in ExtraBucks rewards in-store with your CVS ExtraCare Rewards Card!
Having a #PNW summer really is more than geography. It’s about having that adventurous, wayfarer spirit that is in awe of the beauty around us. It’s about feeling alive and in your own skin. A skin that’s hydrated and healthy from the inside out:).
