When I was younger, once in a while we would get breakfast for dinner. For some reason that was always such a treat. Maybe it’s because breakfast is my favorite meal, or perhaps it was just that we were doing something against the norm. Gotta live on the edge sometimes, right?! ;-).
For this X-Men (Apocalypse) date night I decided to act like a mutant and be different. So I went with a breakfast menu for our date night choice. Mutant and proud :).
X-Men Themed Dinner and a Movie Date Night
Probably not a surprise to many, but I really like the X-Men franchise. I love the development of all the different characters and their mutant “powers”. Many of us can relate to feeling different, it’s just that most of us don’t have supernatural abilities (that I know of). Although, I like to tease some of my friends that since having red hair is technically a mutation of the MC1R protein, I’m basically an X-Man. Sounds better than freak anyway :).
As with all these dinner and a movie date nights, we watch some or all of the movies at home that build up to the current one in the theater (which in this case is X-Men Apocalypse). There are a lot of movies that we could have watched in preparation for this one, but we ended up watching the most relevant ones to this storyline, which were X-Men First Class (which I call X-Men Babies) and X-Men Days of Future Past. I will say of all these date nights we’ve had, watching these movies were most important to remembering the detail and back story. So if you are seeing Apocalypse, and it’s been awhile (or you haven’t seen them at all), I’d recommend you watch these two first.
To go along with our home movie night, I created an X-Men themed dinner.
X-Men Themed Tablescape
Full disclosure, I really wanted to whip up a Magneto Helmet to have as a centerpiece but I couldn’t see how to quickly DIY one and have it come out close to resembling the real thing. So I went simple. Like the menu selection!
I simply cut X’s out of poster board, overlapped them, and then made place mats out of the leftover triangles once the X’s were cut. The colors were a nod to the original X-Men “uniforms”.
What you will need:
One large sheet of both yellow and black poster board.
X-Men Themed Menu
You can use any pancake recipe. I chose these from Cookies and Cups, because brown sugar?! Decision made. Then I simply made some Wolverine slash marks and filled them with red preserves, which in this case was strawberry rhubarb. Mmmmm.
You recognized it as Wolverine, right?! 😉
No explanation needed, and unfortunately no character link. Just put them in the right shape.
Mutant Blue Beverage
This bright blue makes me think of Mystique, Beast, or Night Crawler to name a few. We actually bought this at the store for time’s sake. It didn’t have high fructose corn syrup, but it did have food coloring. I typically try to avoid that, and we could have tried the cabbage trick I used in the Divergent post but I knew I wanted that really bright hue. Special occasion, right?!
This dinner took almost no time at all and it was a lot of fun! Following it, we headed out to see X-Men Apocalypse, and if you follow me on Snapchat (ChasingMyHalo) you’ll see that my hubby was eager to show off his new glasses. They have magnets inside, and when you see 3-D movies you just pop the 3-D “filter” right on top of your lens. They’re pretty cool!
X-Men Apocalypse Review
I really liked it. The script/storyline seemed to deviate from what you normally see with X-Men, but that’s only because I haven’t read the comics so my frame of reference is only the movies. I really love all scenes with Quicksilver, and I thought Storm (played by Alexandra Shipp) was casted very well. Some didn’t like the portrayal of the villain, Apocalypse, but I thought with the special effects he was pretty darn foreboding. Again, I don’t want to give the movie away but it was worth the price of admission and if you’re a fan of the franchise it’s a must see.
I grant it 4.5 out of 5 Halos.
The moral of this story? Stay mutant and proud but don’t try to play God! 😀
