Superheroes. They capture our imaginations and catapult us into a reality where anything is possible and good wins out. I wasn’t much of a comic book reader growing up but I had lots of exposure to them. Our VHS collection (yup, VHS folks) was filled with Superman Movies, and oh how I LOVED the first Batman Movie. Where did he get those wonderful toys? As my knowledge of characters expanded, so did my social circle. Turns out that I have a few friends (and a brother) who know pretty much everything about DC, Marvel etc. So it’s a good thing I like this genre because I’m submersed in it for a while:).
We have been excited for Batman Vs. Superman Dawn of Justice since the trailer, and so when I started this dinner and a movie series this year I knew it would be on the list. I was curious to see how Ben Affleck would do as Batman and although this storyline isn’t new to my comic-loving friends it’s new to me. Plus the introduction of Wonder Woman? Yes, please!
As a reminder, I pick a movie that’s a sequel or has movies in the same series. We have a date night at home watching the movies leading up to the new one, and then see the new one a different night. The previous date night posts were Zoolander and Divergent, and at the end of the posts I give my review of the new movie.

Batman Vs. Superman Themed Tablescape
If this was a party I’d go all out. However, this is a simple date night (often on a weeknight) and so I try to pull from things I already have around the house or that are easy to get. It’s a great way to put to use all those random things lying around. Turns out I also like setting the scene on the table more than making the food on it:).
This one is a very simple tablescape. You will need:
- Red placemats (dollar store)
- Black chargers (I had some from my murder mystery dinner party)
- Blue plates
- Printed out Wonder Woman Logo
- double-sided tape and scissors
- Blue and yellow ribbon (I had from Moon and Stars Baby Shower)
- vases (red and black or clear is fine) I had this black vase I already DIY from the same Halloween Murder Mystery Party.
- contrasting flowers (blue if you use a red vase or red if you use a clear vase)
- tablecloths (2 x black for table and cape, red for cape)
The flowers were simple but all in the colors that I needed. I know you probably don’t think of flowers when you think of caped crusaders, but hey, this is my creation:). As a bonus, I now have fresh flowers (until I kill them, which let’s be real is pretty soon)!
On each of our chair were the “capes”, which you could use dollar store tablecloths or fabric that you may have lying around. One was red and one was black….of course :).
The Wonder Woman glasses were really easy. Just find a logo you like online and print it out. I used double-sided tape to adhere it and I like leaving the wings out because it felt more three-dimensional.
Batman Vs. Superman Themed Dinner
I wanted to make this easy since I knew it was on a weeknight. Menu is as follows:
- Homemade Pizza
- Kryptonite Jello
- Batman Brownies
- Wonder Woman Red Wine or other red drink (Aged is best, “like 100 years”) :).
Batman Vs. Superman Pizza
You guys. I am not an artist. I tried to make this logo the S that looks like a bat in the middle and it was a complete disaster. I then tried to stick with the simple S, and even then my husband has to help me. I seriously can not draw or create like this worth beans but I keep trying! The pizza tasted great even if it didn’t look as good as it did in my head. If you are more artistic than you could create whatever logo you wanted out of these black olives!
Pizza dough from Trader Joe’s.
Homemade tomato sauce
- 1 8 oz can tomato sauce
- 1 TBS fresh oregano (from my little pallet planter I started last year)
- 1/2 TBS dried basil (or fresh if you have it)
- 1 TBS honey
- pinch of salt
Shredded Monterey Jack Cheese
Sliced black olives (3 cans)
My buddy Zach suggested this and it was brilliant. I used this silicone dish to kick it up a notch. I also mixed in 1/2 cup of pear juice with the gelatin to give it added flavor. I got that idea from a green Jell-O “salad” recipe of my mom’s that I love. I plan on giving out that whole recipe along with tips on getting the gelatin out of the mold successfully in May’s newsletter. Trust me, there’s an art to it. Otherwise, your first batch will come out looking more like mine did (see the mound of jello in the pictures above). Although on the upside it looks like true kryptonite then!
- 1 6 oz package of Lime gelatin
- 1 can of pear halves in syrup
Any recipe will do but I used this homemade brownie mix which was easy and delicious.
I took Batman Cookie Cutters and made a stencil out of the small one. You then sprinkle powdered sugar on top and are good to go!
You’ll want to hold the stencil flush with the brownies so your sugar doesn’t get where it shouldn’t.
Batman Vs. Superman Themed Outfit
Would you believe but I didn’t go crazy this time. I just gave my outfit a simple nod to Wonder Woman.
Batman Vs. Superman Dawn of Justice Review
I grant this 2.5 out of 5 stars
As with Zoolander and Divergent, these movies are not getting great reviews but I didn’t think any of them were horrible. I did think it was all over the place and that they packed too much in one movie. I had to confer with one of my comic connoisseurs because some things left me a little confused. I personally think a well done comic movie is one that both newbies and the experts can enjoy. I didn’t love the casting or portrayal of Lex Luther, and I wish they would have developed some plots further or left them out altogether.
That being said there were some great action scenes, Ben Affleck did a decent job as Batman, I love Henry Cavill as Superman, and Wonder Woman had the greatest outfits. Of course.
I was still entertained; I just thought it could have been better.
Have you seen or do you plan on seeing it yet? Let me know what you think!
That’s it for April’s Dinner and a movie date night. See you next month for another superhero flick the world’s been waiting for, Civil War.
