Allegiant (part of the Divergent Series) is out in theaters, and because we had enjoyed the first two movies it made perfect sense to have our March Dinner and a Movie Date Night Divergent themed. This is the second in my year-long series (the first being Zoolander) and I was pretty excited for it, even though I didn’t get a chance to read the books.
As with all the dinner and a movie dates, I try to make an easy tablescape, theme the food and even give my outfit a nod to the movie. The point is to have an actual date night where we watch the new movie, but beforehand we have a fun night at home where we watch some or all the movies that lead up to the one in the theater. There are a few sequels this year! At the end of each post, I’ll give you the review of the new movie too.
Summary of the Divergent Series
Divergent is a science fiction series following the main character Tris Prior from her beginnings of not fitting into the human faction system (labeling her Divergent) to partnering up with Four (the male lead) and going on action-packed quests to find a way to live in peace among the chaos.
The five factions are:
Erudite – The Intellectual (blues)
Candor – The Honest (everything is black and white)
Amity – The Peaceful (lots of reds, purples, vivid colors)
Abnegation – The Selfless (gray)
Dauntless – The Brave (dark colors)
I wanted to represent the five factions in a simple way so I incorporated their colors. Black and white and red/purple table runners were used for Candor and Amity, Blue plates and glasses were for Erudite, black chargers were Dauntless, and (it was next to impossible to find gray) the cloth napkins were for Abnegation. They don’t like attention anyway, right?! I already had everything except the table runners which I easily made from dollar store tablecloths. I put Dauntless in the middle because it’s what she chose in the first movie and, hey, they’re pretty bad a**.
I printed out the symbol for each faction and centered it in the middle of the five plates. Can you guess which faction each is?

Candor – (Appetizer)
Black and White Olive Cheese Bread
This was seriously yummy. I wouldn’t tell a lie with Candor food!
Fruit Salad with lots of reds and purples
Earl Grey Tea Cupcakes I had a really hard time finding grey food, and these tea cupcakes were my nod to grey. I’m sure that no one in Abnegation indulged in sweets but I can see them liking Earl Grey 😉
My homemade Erudite Elixer. Basically a sparkling white liquid with homemade blue food coloring made from cabbage! White cranberry juice and 7 up would be a great choice here.
Pasta with Black Squid Ink (get it here). I figured this was black, so perfect for Dauntless but it was also a little brave of us to try Black Squid Ink Pasta! It actually tasted pretty good :). I just threw on an olive oil/lemon sauce with parsley, parmesan cheese, and grilled chicken.
Divergent Themed Outfit
What faction best fits your fashion style?
I think on any given day I could range between any of the factions. Maybe not Amity as much unless I gave it a Boho chic kind of feel.
I love the Dauntless vibe, and even if my personality is far from the jumping off high buildings type, I can at least dress like I do! :). So this was my OOTD (outfit of the date).
Allegiant Movie Review
Going into this movie we knew that the critics were not kind. It’s getting 11% on Rotten Tomato and the commenters are ripping it apart. I don’t know if it’s because I expected awful but we actually didn’t think it was that bad. Keep in mind that Allegiant was split into two so this was the first installment; that changes things. I also didn’t read the books so I don’t know how it matches up. It was a little cheesy and not scary, but was scary the goal? There was enough action to keep me entertained and I really like the Tris/Four storyline. A bit predictable in parts but I didn’t feel the need to walk out of the theater.
Angie grants this 2.75 out of 5 Halos.
Have you read the books or seen any of the movies? What did you think about Allegiant?
