Life. I don’t know about you but this adulting thing comes with a lot of responsibilities. It seems like the list of needs and things to save money for grows longer and longer the older I get. We’ve had to sacrifice some really fun things (like trips to Hawaii!) in hopes that we can someday reach our goals. However, instead of feeling sorry for myself I’m taking advantage of what we do have now. No kids means plenty of time for date nights without having to get a sitter and a year’s worth of fun movies coming out that we both want to see. To prep for those movies, I’m turning some of our date nights into themed dinner and a movie date nights in. A homemade cinematic experience :).
Zoolander Themed Dinner and a Movie Date Night (In!)
One of the things that initially attracted me most to my husband is his amazing laugh. It’s boisterous and infectious and he’s not afraid to use it. He just happens to love comedies so his laugh has plenty of opportunities to shine. Zoolander is a movie that made us both do that loud laugh thing. Yes, the movie is silly. No, it’s not Oscar-winning, but I’ll take a movie that makes me smile any day. Zoolander 2 came out this month so we planned one weekend to watch the first one at home and the next weekend to see Zoolander 2. Just like with Star Wars the Force Awakens when we watched Episodes 4,5 and 6 to jog our memories and get into the spirit. This date night will be shorter than Star Wars night ;-).
I’m sure it was by design that Zoolander 2 premiered during Fashion Week. I was already in an haute couture state of mind so it was a perfect time to get our Derek on!
For this date night, I tried to use things that we already had around the house. I used long black sparkly fabric (thank you Party Lite consulting days) which doubled as a runway, fashion magazines, disco balls, and bottles of Evian. Of course.
Zoolander Dinner Menu
I kept it pretty minimalistic because do models really eat, anyway? That’s how they stay so “ridiculously good-looking”, right?
Buffalo Chicken Sliders = I made these based off of a Buffalo Chicken Burger recipe from Bobbi’s Kozy Kitchen (a local Seattle area food blogger). We just used ranch instead of blue cheese and model-sized them for our purposes. Why buffalo sauce? First because I’m obsessed. Secondly? It’s so hot right now.
Simple Salad = Butter lettuce, almonds, and vinaigrette dressing.
Evian Water = Because “moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty”.
Orange Mocha Frappuccino = Enough said. Scroll down for my home-made orange mocha frappuccino recipe.
Dessert = Magnum bars. If the look can save the Prime Minister the dessert has to do something impressive to me. I’m sure of it.
I love themes what can I say? This one wasn’t hard because it was the same day I was rocking my Faux Fur and Leather Pants. I apologize for this grainy pic but I felt this post wouldn’t be complete without some type of selfie.
I’m still working on a name for this look. Any suggestions? The Brow? lol.
We had a great night in, and when we saw Zoolander 2 the next week we picked up on a lot of the references that we may have otherwise overlooked. Our Zoolander 2 verdict? It’s about what you’d expect. Over-the-top, lots of laughing, some times when you’re not sure if you should be laughing, a lot of fashion (yay!), and a couple of hours to escape for a bit. I know the critics didn’t like it but I’m not sure what they were expecting. Seriously now, earth to critics :).
Orange Mocha Frappuccino Recipe
Let me just start by saying that in the movie their orange mocha frappes were colored a bright orange. I tried this recipe a few ways and it’s next to impossible to get it as orange as the movie. It still tastes divine though and the version you are getting is the brightest orange yet.
There is a lot of sugar in this drink so I would think of it like a dessert. Moderation, and preferably not every day ;-). Yes, it’s that good.
Speaking of sugar, it’s really important that you have a very fine sugar that will dissolve easily when making the syrup base. I learned this type of fine sugar is called caster sugar. You can get it at certain stores, but you can also easily make it yourself at home in a spice grinder or food processor (although beware the sugar can scratch the plastic lid if you care about that kind of thing).
This step actually does matter. I tried this recipe without grinding my sugar first and the syrup did not turn out the same. Not only did it boil over quickly but it never reached the consistency that I needed. Another important note is that this liquid will rise very quickly so you’ll want to use a large pot and just.keep.stirring!
After you’ve patiently stirred and waited for your liquid to reduce by half it’s time to chill it in the fridge. This is also the time I make my tray of orange ice cubes. If you are going to use a shot of espresso in liquid form this is the time to make it and then chill as well. I found that I could get the drink a shade brighter orange if I put ground coffee in directly. If you prefer a smoother consistency than brew your coffee first and use all chocolate instead of the cocoa nibs.
My orange juice ice cube tray is supermodel perfect!
Mix all the ingredients together and you’ll be jitterbugging in no time!
That’s it for the first of my dinner and a movie night (in) themed date nights. You can expect roughly one of these a month. What do you think? Love it or leave it? ;-).
What do you do to save money for your date nights?

Remember, life is your runway. As a great friend used to always say “no matter what you’ve got to strut”!
