Earlier this month I stepped out of my comfort zone and attended SoFabU On The Road. I figured a one-day event would be a nice way to dip my feet in the blogging conference waters without committing to anything too scary. All my expectations were blown away, and Social Fabric put on a wonderful event that I learned a ton from. I’d highly recommend checking into if their tour stops near you, and hopefully some of the things I learned will motivate you to attend your first conference too!
10 Things I Learned At My First Blogging Conference
1. Bloggers are easy to be around.
Networking is not one of my favorite things (that’s putting it mildly), but most of the time I didn’t even feel like I was networking because the majority of the people I met were super sweet and engaging.
2. Everyone looks familiar.
I kept trying to rack my brain on where I had seen various faces when the obvious was that I had seen them online before. Some were even from various blogging communities that were not local so I had no idea we would meet!
3. There is so much to learn.
I’m sure the seasoned blogger would not be as porous as I, but there were so many creative minds with such helpful things to say that the group discussions ended up being my favorite part! I honestly never would have thought that sentence would escape my lips/keyboard ;).
4. Bring Business cards.
I’m so glad I brought some with me because I ended up going through them all!
5. Have your elevator pitch down.
I realized that as a “lifestyle” blogger I felt insecure among those super-niched bloggers, and it came out through my introduction. The fact is that I love this blog, and I need to come up with a way to verbally communicate that without sounding insecure.
6. Be ready for anything.
Dancing to a Bruno Mars video as an icebreaker? Group trips on foot through downtown Seattle? All part of the itinerary!
7. You won’t be the only one taking pictures of your food.
For once I wasn’t “that girl” who takes pictures of food and is on her phone everywhere. I was not alone!
8. Don’t wait till the night before to update your devices. Charge but don’t change anything!
I thought I was being smart by updating my devices so they would all be functioning at top speed for the conference. What I ended up with was a bricked iPhone at 2:00 in the morning and a sleep-deprived face the next day. Don’t do anything crazy hours before 😉
9. Make an action plan when you get home to apply the things you learned.
The way this event flowed makes application easier, but the work still needs to be put in at home. Prepare to make a plan to put all your new nuggets into place. I’m still working on mine!
10. Prepare for inspiration.
From the keynote speaker to the ideas that you will get throughout the day, this conference fueled and furthered my resolve to keep doing what I’m doing.
Have you gone to a blogging conference before? What have been your favorite ones? Any tips you learned along the way?
Have an inspired Wednesday!
