I have done many awkward and embarrassing things over the years, but there is one that sticks out vividly in my mind.
Let’s take a ride back to college. I started dabbling in modeling a bit. 19 years old is pretty much a grandma in that world, and my hips were far too large to ever make it big time (or even medium time) but I had fun earning a little extra money at a time when any amount of money was much welcomed.
I also had fun on the runway, well most of the time….
(See, when you are 19 they make you model the “older” clothes)
So “the moment” didn’t happen in the real fashion show (thank goodness), but it did happen during the rehearsal for this show and that picture is the closest thing I have to the moment. At that point in my life I was still semi-recovering from the aftermath of a serious car accident I had suffered as a senior in high school. I had lost my front tooth and was awaiting the crown to go over my new dental implant. That meant I had a fake front tooth attached to the teeth on the sides of it while waiting for the bone to heal around the implant. This tooth had broken off a couple of times which was always awful because without it I had literally no front tooth. You can see what’s coming can’t you?
Here I am on the runway during rehearsal, and I must have played with my tongue or something because out pops my front tooth where it then lands on the runway in front of me. I hear a fellow model friend say from the side “Is that a tooth!?” To my horror I muttered, “I’m going to need that”, and then swept it up and proceeded to finish my walk. It wasn’t the end of the world, but seeing that tooth lying there on the catwalk with the music pumping and a front tooth gap was an experience in humility that I will never forget!
