This post has been taken over by my Bullmastiff Bella 🙂
Let me tell you about my day yesterday, because it pretty much rocked! I’m still recovering because it was that good. Wednesdays are one of my favorite days because I get to see my favorite dog walker Sheila from ZenDiggityDog. I can’t wipe the silly smile off my face when I see her, and there is so much energy inside me that I run around in small circles over and over. Sheila calls them “zoomies”. I’m actually not into walks all that much, I know they are necessary for me to keep up my girlish figure but I’m not walk obsessed like some dogs I know. Sheila makes it fun though, and to tell you a little secret she is much more patient with me on walks then my Mom.
I am not walk-obsessed but I am food-obsessed. I’m quite the foodie in fact, ask anyone! Inside my breakfast this morning was an extra special surprise! A homemade treat was on top of my food. First, I should back up and say Mom woke me up with extra hugs and kisses, and kept saying Happy Birthday. If memory serves me correctly, I usually get pretty awesome food when that phrase it said. The first year I heard it I actually had a dog party thrown for me! This is the 9th time I’ve heard that phrase! I think I’m starting to get it, but I digress. My breakfast. The homemade dog treat. Yum! I had a sneak peek the night before when they were baking, and they were good. Slightly bland perhaps, but they also won’t upset my delicate tummy. It definitely enhanced the flavor of my breakfast, and I get to snack on them throughout the week! If you want to try them yourself, or know any dog foodies like me, you can get the recipe here.
Besides the walk with Sheila on a glorious day, I spent most of the afternoon napping. It’s kind of what I do. As soon as Mom got home she started cooking up a storm. I never in a million years imagined it was for me. I should have connected the dots, because it is this “Birthday” after all! For dinner I had my traditional Birthday meal of Granny’s Pot Pie. I usually finish my dinner before you can sing the alphabet, but when I have Granny’s Pot Pie it’s warp speed!
A bit after dinner, Mom and Dad sang to me (which I thought was pretty funny), and then they laid down the most eye watering dog-cake you have ever seen. Seriously!
I tried my best to be patient.
and at first I thought I would try licking the toppings like a lady.
Then I thought “Hey, it’s my Birthday!”
They didn’t let me eat though whole thing, but I would have if given the chance!
I asked Mom if I could share the recipe with you, and this is what she gave me.
Dog Gone Good Canine Cake
1 C. Organic Whole Wheat Flour ( I usually try to stay grain-free but it’s a special day, you can use any other substitute you want)
1/2 C. Rolled Oats
1/4 C. Organic Peanut Butter (Sugar and salt free)
1 C. Shredded Carrots
1 C. Shredded Apples
1/2 C. 100% Pumpkin Puree
1/4 C. Honey
1/4 C. Coconut Oil
1/4 C. water
4-5 Med potatoes, peeled and diced
Organic baby food (turkey or pumpkin blend)
Dog treats of choice
Pre Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together in a large bowl, and put in a greased round cake pan (I used a 9 inch). Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking the center to make sure the toothpick comes out clean. While the cake is baking, boil the diced potatoes (about 10-15 minutes) until easily pierced with a fork. Let the potatoes cool and then put through a potato ricer or mash your own way. After the cake has cooled pat the potatoes down on the top for the frosting ( it helps if they are slightly warm). For the icing, the baby food container served as a nice piping bag, but you can also put whatever you are using in a Ziplock back with the corner snipped off to easily decorate. Lastly, place your treat of choice around the perimeter for a finished look your pup will love. Enjoy!
The night didn’t end at the cake either! They gave me a gift of my favorite toys; a soft and seamless stuffed animal, and a tennis ball. I think of myself as the Buffy the Vampire Slayer of the dog world. Instead of vampires, I take down tennis balls, and I am good. Really good.
After all the excitement I was in a bit of a food coma, and am still feeling it today. I had my annual check up at the vet this morning and I gained 4 pounds! We tried to tell them we simply partied too hard the night before, but I’m not sure if he believed us. Anyways, life is pretty good at 9 years old. In Mastiff world that’s like 80 people years! They say you are only as old as you feel, and I am still living it up! So maybe I have gray hair and have to take medication for my hips, who cares?! I can still run around like I did when I was 1. I just need to schedule in a lot of nap time afterward, and I think I hear my couch calling me right now….
